Adele Miles Photography is a Perth based Photography business prodominately photographing weddings, families and special events.
The business was established in 2004 while I was on maternity leave with baby number 2 - the business grew slowly along with needs of my baby. Now my 'baby' is in primary school and the business is keeping me busy!
I can not remember a time when I was not passionate about photography - on holidays there were always more rolls of film than the days I was away for. It was not until the arrival of my second child that I became less passionate about working in laboratories and it took over 6 months to work out that photography was what I was passionate about and could be the new career I was looking for. So back to University I went, to get a formal photography education. This gave me the grounding and practical skills I needed to photograph successfully. It also reinforced the passion I have for photography, many a late night was spent in the black and white dark room, holding my breath to see the images I had photographed become first negatives then prints. It was an amazing feeling.
I have been working as a photographer for the past 6 years, I started out photographing children on 'Santa's Knee', then moved on to photographing school portraits all the while slowly building up my own business. 2008 was a great turning point for me as I was able to focus entirely on my own business and not work for anyone else.
In the last 12 months I had the pleasure of photographing models for a bridal magazine's wedding dress editorial. It was a fantastic experience and although I thought 'pretend' brides would be harder to work with, they were not harder just different, they have the skills to stand, look and move the way you want them too but they don't have that "Oh my goodness I am getting married" feel about them, the nervous excitement that I get from brides on their wedding day. 'Real' brides are much more rewarding to photograph, capturing the moments that will live with a bride forever, the small treasures that are unexpected and the sincerity of the love you can see on a brides face, all make the job I love worthwhile.
I have one favorite image from my time at university which was a competition entry which needed to reflect 'Student Life', I won and the photo and cheque (well a copy of it, I banked the real one) are framed together in my living room. It is the realisation that my images could make money.
My favourite bridal couple is every couple! Their story, their ceremony, the photos, the location, the season - they are all so different. There are parts of each wedding that are my favourite and I have favorite photographs from every wedding I photograph.
Moving into the next financial year I hope to increase the number of weddings I photograph a little - not too much as I limit weddings to 2 per month, so I keep the work-home balance and don't spend all of my weekends enjoying someone else's family.
