Frequently Asked Questions

13. Do you have any advice or pearls of wisdom that you would like to share? The key to getting the right cake is to make sure that the decorator listens and understands what you, as a couple want to SEE when you walk into the room . Make sure you understand the actual size of the cake don't just go from a picture . Ensure the decorator understands the theme you want to achieve and they are not going to turn your design into one of their standard designs ( some decorators have a particular style they can't change and they will talk you into this design/Style as it is easier for them) Ensure you have a copy of the details for your records. MAKE SURE THE CORRECT LOCATION, DATE, AND THE FUNCTION START TIME ARE RECORDED. AS IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW GOOD IT LOOKS IF IT DOESN'T TURN UP OR IS LATE! 12. Have you seen any new trends or shifts in trends in the past 12-18 months? Diamantes (bling), larger sizing, icing characters are still very popular , larger exotic flowers (not so much the small and pretty) better use of colours as most of the advanced decorators will use airbrushing to apply the colours in a more unique way 11. Can you suggest any ways a couple can have a unique wedding cake on a modest budget? The least expensive way to have a unique cake on a budget is to have the cake decorator to make the cake and put your own fresh flowers on. 10. What variants affect the price of a wedding cake? The number of tiers, the size of the tiers, e.g 3 small tiers or 2 larger tiers, the quantity of flowers. Handmade flowers /or sugar flowers. If all the cake is on display or if there is kitchen cake, keeping the top tier or not having figurines made from sugar . Keep in mind, normally the most expensive component on a cake is the labour! 9. What price range could a couple anticipate to pay for a wedding cake to feed 100 guests? (Note: this question is very broad, I've answered with a general price range and possibly a short description of the type of design for that price.) The price range will depend initially on whether the cake is being used as coffee or dessert if the cake is for coffee you need only cater for up to 70% of the guests as the cake is not served individually and is served once the formal part of the night is over ( everyone is dancing , left their tables etc ) The alternative is if the cake is being used as dessert this is when the cake is part of the banquet feast. In this case the cake must be a generous slice and cater for every single person attending as the cake is served individually to each guest. On this occasion you will need 3 times as much cake. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO DISCUSS THESE OPTIONS WITH THE VENUE AS THEY MAY CHARGE YOU "CAKEAGE" TO SERVE THE CAKE AS DESSERT. To cater for 100 finger slices and keeping the top tier for their anniversary including delivery and GST the cost will be from $400.00 aprox. If as dessert then $500.00 aprox . The decorations will include hand madeflowers (not all around the tiers) embroidery and ribbon etc . 8. What deposit (%) is required to confirm the order and when is the balance due? We ask for a$100.00 deposit to place the order and then a later payment to make up half the cost of the cake . The final payment we request 10 days prior to the wedding. Once a deposit is taken on the cake then the price is locked in and they can still make changes etc if need be . This helps enormously with budgeting as you can pencil in the cost. 7. What timeframe should a couple allow for the initial consultation and any subsequent consultations? As stated before we recommend 8-10weeks, however it will be hard for the couple to relate to a design if they don't have the rest of their details in place . The exception can be a bride who knows exactly what she wants and we can then book the cake in up to 12 months prior to the wedding as all our details are written in contractual form and the couple have their copy to check the details . If the cake is ordered well in advance then we suggest they call back to the showroom 4 weeks prior to confirm all the details are still correct. 6. If a couple is unsure of what they want, how do you concept a cake for their wedding? We go to the basics such as mentioned before e.g matching invitations flowers dresses but the main thing is to capture the overall feeling of the event such as traditional, funky, pristine and formal or fun etc 5. Should a couple order a larger cake than they anticipate needing? We suggest that a couple think of what they want to see when they walk into the wedding Banquet. There is the practical side which means only catering for what you need this may however be smaller than visually than what they want as a visual feast (this is the emotional side) . We suggest that the cake should be to scale to the wedding no matter how good a cake looks if it is just huge compared to the number of guests when the guests look at the cake the first thing they will think no matter how good it looks is "gee look how big it is!'' or how small! 4. Should a couple provide colour samples and if so when? There should always be samples of colour ,we have our own colour charts if we do not have the correct colour we suggest they supply us with a swatch . This is a major point as the colour and how it is used can have a significant effect to the overall appearance of the cake. 3. What information should a couple have on hand for their first meeting with a cake supplier? The couple should have The invitations, dress, brides maid colours/ dresses, flowers, general theme in mind 2. How should a couple go about finding a reputable wedding cake designer/supplier? Normally venues have a list of prefered suppliers ,obviously friends and there are a lot of web sites that list services 1. When should a couple engage the services of a cake designer/supplier? We suggest 8-10 weeks but it does depend on the time of the wedding if it is in the peak season or not. There is no harm doing some ground work prior to this as in checking web sites etc.
