Role of the Groomsmen and Best Man

Being asked to take part in the bridal party as a groomsman is a great honour and privilege for many men who are closely related to the bride and groom. The groomsmen are there to support the groom, accompany the bridesmaids and to take part in the overall organisation and procedure of the day, while also adding to the formality of the event.

Being a groomsman is a big commitment for a man to take on with there usually being a selection of duties that they must perform, all in the aim of assisting the groom to prepare and enjoy his wedding day. While there is usually some amount of financial commitment, such as the wedding suits, that may be required the part of being a groomsman always requires a range of other important duties.

Groomsmen Duties for a Wedding

The duties of a groomsman will often be affected by how many groomsmen are in the bridal party, as they will usually be delegated within the party. Tasks such as making a speech and escorting guests to their seats are some examples of optional tasks that may or may not be needed.

However, there are a number of groomsman duties that are a constant factor for any man who agrees to take part on the bridal party:

  • Organise tuxedos (rental or purchasing) with all other groomsmen
  • Assist in organising the bachelor party
  • Assist in any decoration set up, picking up of wedding items
  • Help in the transportation of guests
  • Attend all pre-wedding events such as rehearsal dinners
  • Create and follow the time schedule for the wedding (never be late)
  • Partner a bridesmaid down the aisle and throughout the reception
  • Be present for all photography
  • Assist with the packing up at the end of the reception
  • Support the Best Man in his duties
  • Support the Groom

Best Man Duties for a Wedding

While being a groomsman is a great gesture of how important a man is to the marrying couple, being the Best Man is reserved for the individual who has the closest male bond with the groom and will offer support and assistance throughout the entire wedding period. Therefore, the duties that fall into the Best Man responsibilities list include:

  • Coordinating with the groom to organising all the groomsmen
  • Organising the tuxedos with both the groom and the groomsmen
  • Coordinating with the Maid of Honour at all times such as the arrival times at the ceremony venue
  • Plan to bachelor party
  • Delegate duties to the groomsmen
  •  Help organise and attend all pre-wedding events
  • Prepare a speech for the wedding
  • Help the groom get ready on the day
  • Get the groom to the ceremony venue well before the bride
  • Organise the ushers (which may be the groomsmen, depending on the size of the wedding)
  • Escort the Maid of Honour, Mother of the Bride and Groom and other family members at the reception
  • Prepare the now-married couple for their departure from the reception, especially if leaving straight for the honeymoon with their luggage and travel documents

Being in the bridal party is a serious role with reasonability attached, weddings are highly expensive and any mistakes are very costly. Speaking of costs, there may be some financial commitments that are associated with the role of groomsmen and Best Man, including:

  • Buying or renting the tuxedo
  • Covering any travel expenses, both personal and those on the day
  • Contribute to the bachelor party and any other pre-wedding events
  • Hotel costs
  • Gift to the newlyweds

The role of a groomsmen or Best Man is a huge responsibility that the soon-to-be married couple is instilling on a person, yet at the same time, it is an opportunity to take part in a great celebration and party with your closest friends and relatives.
