Wedding News > Fostering creativity for a unique wedding

14 May 2008

Wedding planning is a great outlet for your creativity, but sometimes it can be difficult to come up with anything new when the pressure's on. Many creative professionals hit creative blocks on a frequent basis and develop techniques that help the ideas to flow again. One of the best parts of creativity in weddings is that there are so many areas you can demonstrate it. If you're having trouble trying to come up with fun new ideas for your wedding you should first consider the areas you would like to work on.

Wedding fashion and beauty

The most obvious place you can show creativity is in your wedding fashion, but it can be difficult to do it right. It's very costly to have unique dresses made for yourself and your bridesmaids, but you can also be creative by choosing non-traditional fashions for your wedding. This can be especially good for warmer climates and for dancing at the reception afterwards, as traditional wedding dresses are often impractical to move in.

Wedding cakes

Wedding cakes offer a lot of creativity, as there are so many elements to them. The size of the cake is largely dictated by the number of guests attending, but then there are issues such as what the base will be, the kind of icing or frosting used, the decorations, and the overall design of the wedding cake. Decorations can be used to create a montage of you and your partner's relationship or to create a mock diorama of your wedding ceremony. The wedding cake is a centrepiece of most receptions, so being creative with it can leave a lasting impression on your guests.

Wedding cars

The cars your wedding party travels in can be a fun way to show your creativity, as not only is it a perfect opportunity to try out some older model cars, there is also an opportunity for decorations. This is usually limited to a few ribbons attached to the hood ornament, but you could certainly come up with a great set of decorations that help you to make a spectacular entrance. If you want to remain traditional but still demonstrate creativity, then you may wish to choose a colour scheme for your wedding cars that is particularly meaningful to you and your partner, and explain this in the wedding program.

Wedding music

Many times this element is left to the band, but if you have a passion for music it can be very rewarding to carefully choose the wedding music as well as what is played at your reception. This can also be used to create a specific atmosphere at different points in the day to more easily transition to particular parts of the event. For instance, many bands stop playing while food is being served due to the lack of dancers at that point, but you could instead have them play softer music. This can also be a good strategy slightly before the speeches, as more people will naturally be returning to their seats and will naturally modulate their voices to a lower volume. A very loud instrumental introduction immediately prior to the speeches should then grab people's attention. Musical choices can both be an outlet for creativity and help with event planning, so do consider careful selection of music as a part of your wedding.
