Wedding News > Pull off your dream wedding without the stress
12 June 2008
Planning a wedding is hard work. You have expectations from everyone- friends, family, your partner and even yourself. To help you pull off a stress free wedding, here are some hints to help keep everyone calm in the lead up to your big day.
- Teamwork. Sit down with your partner and discuss wedding ideas. Teamwork is important when it comes to planning a wedding - you need to work together and back each other up. Working with friends and family will also help with the task of planning a wedding.
- Discussion. What sort of wedding you want? Traditional, non-religious, extravagant, casual? What theme do you want to go with? Grab some wedding magazines and go over them together to get an idea of costs, timelines and tips. Consider what are you going to do about family squabbles? What if it rains? Devise action plans to help handle the stress in case something goes wrong before the wedding. Remember - if it can go wrong, it probably will.
- Budget. A wedding can be financially draining. Many people are shocked by the costs of a modern wedding. To avoid any nasty last minute expenses, be sure to consider all factors when devising a budget. Do you want to spend lots of money on the wedding, or do you want to save a little extra for the honeymoon? Should the bridal party contribute towards their dresses? Do you want to set up a gift registry, or have a wishing well for people to contribute money towards? If your parents contribute towards your wedding, they might think this gives them some input. Be clear on the conditions before accepting money from your family.
- Organisation is key! Get a notebook and start writing down lists and sticking in pictures of things you like from other people's wedding. You'll need to keep track of everything and everyone involved in your wedding. You can make clear comparisons when finalising things like florists, caterers, and car hire. You can make notes on how well you're going by sticking to your timeline and your budget. Good wedding organisation will really help you avoid stress.
- Venue. Confirm with the venue owner all the details before you view the site. Check seating capacity, decorations, catering costs, and bar prices to see if they are within your budget. View all wedding venues. Think about other weddings you've been to - what did you like/dislike about the venue? Consider all these factors when making your final decision.
- Invitees. Be brutal - it's your wedding and you can invite who you like. Set aside seating for the bride's family and friends and the groom's family and friends. Stick to your original guest list and most importantly, stick to your budget. If your parents want to invite people - be firm about saying no. Remember your teamwork resolve!
- Wedding Dress. Consider your best assets and utilise them. Take your wedding notebook and go in knowing what styles you like. A small group of friends will help you avoid picking out something that's truly hideous. It's easy to get carried away with picking out the perfect dress - but you must stick to your budget.
