Wedding News > Thinking about your wedding cake?

27 June 2008

Wedding cakes are the traditional dessert at most weddings. Wedding cakes come in all sorts of flavours and designs these days - you're not stuck to the usual fruit cake with marzipan icing. You're only limited by your imagination.

Wedding cake prices vary. They're usually based on how many slices you'd like out of your cake and if you want the cake delivered to your reception before the wedding. The choice of icing can also cost extra. Fondant icing often costs more - it is very sweet and not to everyone's liking. The decorations you choose, such as flowers, figurines, and lacing, may cost extra. Cupcakes can also be pricey.

If you're undecided on what flavour you want for your wedding cake, ask your baker for a time when you can come in and do a taste test. Discuss with your baker what shape you'd like your cake in - square, round, tiered, or something more original. Square cakes usually offer more slices than a round cake. Listen to the suggestions of your baker - they've done this many times before.

Try to order your cake well in advance, at least six months before hand. If you're having your cake delivered to the reception, check to see if the deliverer will be able to fix any damage the cake receives during the trip. Tiered cakes come separated - they are placed on tiers at the venue.
