Designing Your Engagement Ring

Buying a designer engagement ring is suave and will earn you a lot of grateful kisses and hugs. Your girlfriend will feel special, alright. But if you want to take it up another notch, you can ensure that only she, has that kind of engagement ring by designing it yourself. Most jewelers nowadays offer customised engagement rings. You can design your engagement ring by picking out the colour of the stone, the material of the ring band, and adding extra features. In fact, you can make your engagement ring as simple or as intricate as you want. Here are some tips in designing your engagement ring:

1. Consult a jeweler and set your budget.

The price of a customized ring depends on the design and all the work a jeweler has to do in executing it. If you don't have any idea about the cost and the design you want, consult a jeweler. He or she can give you advice on ring design and an estimate of the ring's costs. This way, you can work with a set budget and have an idea what you can do with the money you have at hand.

2. Pick out a gemstone.

A diamond is the most popular gem used in engagement rings. It is widely chosen because it is a classic and it can go with whatever kind of outfit or occasion. Unless your girlfriend prefers other kinds of gemstones, it is safer to choose a diamond. It is always advised that in choosing a diamond, you have to note of the four C's. These are the clarity, cut, colour, and carat.

  • Clarity. When you talk about clarity in diamonds, it means that the clearer it is, the higher the value that goes along with it. Imperfections on diamonds are either on the surface that are called blemishes, or inside it, usually called as inclusions. Clarity in diamonds largely matters because a clearer diamond has more brilliance and sparkle.
  • Cut. There are various diamond cuts you can choose from. Ask the opinions of her friends or family if your girlfriend prefers an Asscher, a cushion, an emerald, an oval, a marquise, a pear, a princess, a round, or a radiant cut.
  • Colour. colour, on the other hand, ranges from clear to yellow. Again, the clearer the colour is, the higher the value of the diamond. Popular colours include blue, green, red, and yellow diamonds.
  • Carat. This determines the weight and size of the diamond.

3. Choose a band setting.

There are six settings you can choose from, these are the three-stone setting, baguette, bezel, half bezel, channel, channel end, pave, prong, and tension. In choosing the best band material for your engagement ring, consider your girlfriend's reaction to particular metals since some can irritate sensitive skin. Bands can be made from gold, silver, platinum, titanium, or stainless steel.

Take note that most engagement rings are done in a span of six weeks or even longer. If you want your ring to be engraved, you still have to find an engagement ring engraver in case your jeweler does not have one. That also will take some time to be done. So don't get too excited in planning your proposal immediately. Wait for your engagement ring to be finished first, then set your proposal date later. That way, you can be sure that you already have the ring.
